A brick steeple with a 350-year-old soundtrack—still ringing out the same carillon it has since 1666.
The story
Founded by the German merchants who once helped run Stockholm’s economy, this became the very first German Lutheran church—Sweden formally went Lutheran even before northern Germany did. These days, Germans come to Sweden less for commerce and more for the pristine nature that’s grown scarce back home.
What to notice
- The carillon: has played four times daily since 1666.
- The church itself: free to enter, with a churchyard café out back.
Next stop
Wander through the churchyard, exit onto Svartmangatan, and follow it right to an iron railing overlooking Österlånggatan for the viewpoint.
