The story
Järntorget served as a medieval customs checkpoint, and the yellow, barred-window building on the square was home to Sweden’s first bank, founded in 1680. Practical matters aside, it’s also a handy spot to grab picnic supplies at the Co-op Nära supermarket. From here, Västerlånggatan—Gamla Stan’s main pedestrian, eating, and shopping drag—cuts back across the island.
