Setting the scene

A railing overlooking Österlånggatan that reveals the ghost of Stockholm’s medieval shoreline.

The story

The curve of the street below traces the old waterline. Medieval piers once reached out into the harbor like fingers; as land was gradually reclaimed, those piers extended further and eventually became the very lanes you see today, still leading toward what were once more distant piers.

What to notice

  • The street’s curve: marks where the medieval shoreline used to run.
  • A nearby shop: where, whimsically, elves can be seen making elves.

Next stop

Walk right onto Österlånggatan and continue on to Järntorget.
